Does anyone weigh down their topless crab traps, and if so what do you use?

Absolutely!  They are useless unless they land top side up on the bottom.

I use an 8 oz "bank" sinker zip tied under the trap.   To help it lay flatter... I sledgehammer the bank sinker flat.  Its actually quite easy to mash flat with lead. :)

I use a 5 oz wt. The stronger the tide you crab in the heavier the wt.

I like weights in all my traps, box and topless.  I melt lead and pour into a metal lid.  I used ovaltine lids until they went with plastic.  I drill small holes for galvanized wire and wire them in with snoods on top.

Over the years I have caught crabs in some very fierce currents with these.

i use 8 inch pieces of rebar and zip tie them in place. i use one zinc on anyone of the traps to mitigate rust .
