This isn't your typical crab report but more of a restaurant review.. me and the family decided to check out this place and it was a very pleasant atmosphere, beautiful view and couldn't ask for nicer service.. while everyone else had the typical burger or chicken tenders with fries, I went and ordered something I haven't had in about 30 years, a Fried Softshell Crab sandwich , it's been so long that I was actually drooling over the thought it would be on my plate in a matter minutes.. then the moment arrived and the sandwich looked great, I picked it up and took a Huge bite... Mystery went through my head, what did I just eat? What could give this such an "off" taste that was very fishy and had a hint of aquarium water?? So I put it down and started to check out the crab, now I'm not sure about you guys BUT first and foremost for me and they way I was taught to treat a softshell before cooking is to trim the eyes, use scissors and cut back the shell and remove the lungs and the deadman.. Welp big surprise for me, I guess they don't do that there and the putrid taste I could not take another bite, I ate the hush puppies and fries and cole slaw .. sometimes you just gotta order the burger as the rest of my family said the food was great

That's too bad you had a bad experience there!
Their food is usually prepared very well.
I like their Florida fish soup and usually just order a fish sandwich with it.
Probably a rarity but I don't care for soft crabs. I prefer a rusty shelled jumbo!
Retired in paradise!

In all reality we had a very nice experience there and loved being right on the water, we will definitely come back.. I just won't get the softshell sandwich, I understand people prepare food differently it's just when it comes to crabs you are always supposed to remove all the garbage inside of them before you cook and eat it.. all in all I'm a fan of the restaurant and like I said, I will go back

LOL Plankton, Your gilling, I mean killing me, funny post, Only I cant believe this post did not start a firestorm on how to cook and not to cook our favorite crusty fellow, Personally, Shell on Boil, Flash Cool in cooking Broth, clean as you eat, Yes to the tomalley, NO to the Gills... No matter how you do it, We all agree on 1 thing, >Callinectes sapidus<= (Beautiful Swimmer) Is Delicious..

If the crab was trimmed and cleaned BEFORE frying it would have been great.. it was basically tossed in the fryer with EVERYTHING still in tact, then thrown on a bun with some sauce that did Not hide the nastiness of the deadman and gills that were still inside.. like I said I loved the atmosphere and family loved the burgers but for Me, that softshell crab from that place is a No Go

Ahh, sorry I misunderstood  you Plankton, I agree with you 100% when it comes to soft shell s, I would have given them a heads-up as the proper way to do it foreshore.
