Looking for a trotline winder, any suggestions?

I looked at your other posts and it looks like you're a recreational crabber.

A lot of recs seem to like the "Chesapeake Winder". It's a light duty electric winder. It wouldn't hold up to commercial long-lines and daily use, but for a weekend crabber it seems to be pretty well received. Price starts at around $800 and you can add options that raise it. I don't have one, and I'm not affiliated. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the direct link so just search the internet for "Chesapeake Winder" and it should come up with the guy's website for direct purchase as well as some resellers.

Captain Bruce sells a heavier duty and more sturdy electric winder, more money of course (about double the above). I would consider his a mid-duty semi-commercial model?? The real heavy user commercial guys are using custom built winders and often (though not always) hydraulic powered ones.  I'm sure there are other sellers.

I use an old garden hose reel to hand-crank in my line (no snoods). It works well enough that I don't dread reeling in my (1000') line... but it's enough effort still that I don't enjoy reeling in my line. I don't have or use an auto-winder of any kind myself so my opinion may not be worth much  ::)

P.S. if  you're interested in picking up a used one, try Facebook Marketplace. They seem to show up there pretty regularly in varying styles, ages, and conditions. I rarely ever see them come up on other classified style sites.

Just got my Commercial License.  Yeah, I'm going to check out Captian Bruce, they have a show Feb17-18th Kurts beach Pasadena.  Kastle Bros too heavy for me 80 lbs.  Captian Bruce says his are like 35.

I saw Capt. Bruce's winders at a local fishing swap meet thing down here in southern Maryland last spring and they looked nicely made and sturdy. They may not be as bullet proof as the Kastel ones but I am betting they're pretty good. They're all too rich for my blood as a rec, I'll stick to my hose reel for now and get a tiny bit of a workout.

I still keep kicking around ideas involving wiper motors and bike chains and sprockets and other such ideas but haven't tried to DIY anything yet.

Chesapeake winder is more than adequate for a rec crabber. I am part time comm. but crab a lot, and I'm going on my 4th season with one. I did replaced disc an the knife last year. Motor and gear box might not make it through this season but at $150 (I think) and 30 at minutes at most to replace I am happy with it. I had a kastel for 6 years heavy duty for sure! Had to replace that motor at almost $500 ( thats just motor not gear box).

That's what I do, even moving my 1200' line a few times trying to fill the basket.  Gives you Popeye forearms :)   
Put that boat in forward and just idle on down the line.

At the end of your final run unhook your float and anchor and go back to your lead and start.  Little to no resistance.  Up in no time.

I have one. Works great.  I've had it a # of years.  Left on the boat all season only issue was I had to put a new switch in it once.
