Hey all - This is new member Jack from Wilmington, DE.  I haven't crabbed in 20+ years but my son and father want to revisit the hobby.  We're considering purchasing a house in the Chesapeake Bay Area, and I'd like to be in an area that's good for crabbing.  My last crabbing experience was off my grandparents' bulkhead in the Rehoboth Bay Area when I was a kid, haha.

Looking at places on eastern/western shore but the closer to Wilmington the better.  I'm assuming the crabbing is better further south, but is it safe and effective to crab in the greater Baltimore area?   Looking at areas like Middle River, Sparrows Point, maybe even as north as Aberdeen.   Laugh at me if this is a dumb question!   I won't be insulted.  (https://www.bluecrab.info/forum/Smileys/new/smiley.gif)  Thanks!

if u want an area that has options on where to crab i would look at the kent island - grasonville area. eastern bay, the narrows and chester river are all close by. the wye river is also not too far. You could also cross the BB and crab the severn river. if your looking to buy a home in this area be ready to spend some $$$$$$.

Thanks!  Those are the other areas I've been eyeing up, so that's helpful to get some confirmation.  But just confirm, the Baltimore area is not an option?   To your point, it's a little cheaper but I've heard mixed reviews.  Some say it's okay to throw out some pots and others caution over poor water quality from heavily trafficked waterways.

balt area is ok, thats where i crab BUT, it is almost always crowded with comm and recs. the reason i say this the population in that area. far more people come to balt area and most of the patapsco.

This is helpful, thanks!   Ultimately, I'd like to be in an area where I can crab off a house pier for fun and get a few from time to time.  But then also be close enough to good areas if I want to grab a boat and get more serious.

I definitely like the idea of Kent and Eastern shore, but I wouldn't mind being near Baltimore to catch some O's games as well, haha.  Some of those areas around Sparrows Point, Back river, middle river have a lot of nice waterfront spots.  Might be cool if half-assed crabbing off a backyard pier is reasonably successful.
