The Mad Crabber

Hello all,

I have a brackish aquarium set up with a ~5.25 inch male blue crab as the sole resident.  He has been with us for a little over a week, and he's the first crab I've kept. Having some trouble dialing in just how much this guy needs to eat. Searches through this forum, but wasn't able to find many specifics on how much, just what foods to use. I figured as much as he would eat immediately - problem is, he eats everything immediately. We've built up from one small feeder fish per day, now to two fat feeder goldfish and a healthy portion of crab specific pellets. He at least is slowing down with the second larger fish (which are probably three times bigger than the first small ones). There is nothing left at the end, no leftover pellets or fish chunks. Are we overfeeding him? How much do you all typically feed one?

I was thinking of setting up an aquarium for a blue recently as well, it would be great to be able to see one doing its thing so hope your successful. Sorry, no idea what they should require but as a general rule in fishkeeping, feed the aquarium, not the fish. Your aquarium has to be "alive" to support any other life as you probably already know, so overfeeding anything will be detrimental to your tank which is what normally kills fish or anything else more often than underfeeding. As a scavenger they likely can eat all day long so maybe start with two feedings a day that he can finish in ten or fifteen minutes.

They will eat until they have no more room. Forget the live food.  Buy some cheap fish filet's. Give the crab a whole (big) piece. When it abandons the filet take out the left over so it doesn't spoil the aquarium water.  What's missing from the filet will give you a idea of what it takes to fill the crab up.  BTW, the crab will stop eating days before it's going to shed.
