I have had many people ask me about Allerio vs Perfectionist Rings.

When I first started kayak crabbing I ordered a dozen Allerio Bros rings. They are very heavy but they were much better than the cotton Walmart rings.  They worked for me, but I started working some of Adams (arti0972) Perfectionist rings. Much lighter and very well made. After several years I ordered another dozen Allerio s but in single ring. I added my own 9 gauge bottom ring to reduce the weight. At the time they came in I also got some of Jim's Perfectionist Rings.  Started using them side by side in the same locations catching crabs.

When I was out last week I noticed some broken areas in my nets.  Got home and rinsed everything off and let them air dry.  I brought them in tonight and got out my tarred repair line and set out repairing the damage.  What surprised me was how many areas I had to fix on the Allerio s vs the Perfectionist.  Right now the Allerio s have easily 5 repairs per trap. Out of over a dozen Perfectionist rings I made 2 single spaced repairs total.

The quality of those rings are far superior to the Allerio rings.

When I purchased my Perf Rings I also received some mesh and line to make repairs  ;D ;D

He has the best ring traps that I've seen(other than my own   lol Jim)...I make my own and have 30+ from winter that I might not get to try this year...I DID make these out of 1/4"gal hoop wire so they are heavier and need no weights added...Plus side is my thinking that it will take more current to flip these compared to my 100+ rings I've done out of 9ga.. All my 14" center(bait) rings are 9ga...I have yet to ever have to repair any string..I use #12 net and #18 drop lines, all tarred...I have lost a few that 'just wouldn't come up'....
I'm niether proud nor embarrassed, I'm a man....Sometimes I sh!t my pants.....It's part of the deal.

For what I do, especially from a kayak Jim's rings work the best for me. Adam had him make some special that are a little bit deeper basket for kayak crabbers. It makes it easier to keep them in while pulling them up.

I have just had so many people asking about the comparison between Jim's Perfectionist rings and the Allerio rings, after going through my set and seeing the difference in repairs needed it was a good time to just put my observations in writing and post it here.

There is more to making good quality rings than most people realize.  Jim has it down to an art.  I know I can get rings cheaper, but like Adam pointed out " they just won't hold up or perform the way the Perfectionist rings do".

Have to agree with you that Perfectionist Rings are the best made and are easy to repair. I use 20 Perf. and also have 5 Allero which are well made but extremely heavy. I use them in deeper areas because the Allero is a deeper built ring, and the crab tends to stay in longer
I crab from a ponton boat, usually by myself, and the Perf. rings usually, as I pull them up, get behind the boat and will at times dump the crab out. Just have to pull fast.
Just my two cents!
Oh! Where has Perfectionist been?

One thing I noticed was that the netting on my first Allerio s held up decently.  The batch I got several years later the netting did not hold up nearly as well. I think they changed material. One thing I learned about Adam ( arti0972) was that he researched everything. Anything he used, there was a reason he used that brand, model or style.  He said he used Allerio ( he was the one who told me about them) but when got his Perfectionist rings he gave all of his Allerio rings to a friend.  He liked that the Perfectionist rings were lighter, worked better and took up less space on his kayak. I have to agree with him.

Jim (Perfectionist) is still around, just busy taking care of things.  I am hoping he can make it to the Get Together this year.
