crabbin paisano

Yesterday around 7;30 i took the yak out for the 3rd time this year with the weather calling for a stiff breeze i decided to try the calm confines of Forge pond for the 1st time ever. The Metedeconk runs into it.Very picturesque with the trees.I had 5 drop lines with thighs and the ist stop produced 2-3 small crabs on every line. Then a guy puttind a boat in the water for some crappie fishing suggested i take a trip to the broken pilings on the Metedeconk he said it was a good spot.Too windy and i only caught 2 nice crabs in an hour. So i headed back to the pond with out going tide and another guy said you do better now they for some reason you catch bigger crabs on the tide change. he was right on and it the next 1.5 hrs i got 23 before calling it a day.

Crabbin Paisano,
Again, crabbing off a dock and kicking butt. I just finished cleaning up the boat at 7:50 PM, the day after our trip, after a grinding day. And all you have to do is spray the dock off with a hose. What I'm I doing wrong. Enjoy your blessing, I'm jealous. Happy Columbus Day my friend.

Noreast i cleaned these crabs at my mother-in-laws dock but they were caught at Forge pond on Sunday morning.

I don't bother on an slack tide. I will wait to launch my kayak so I can set my gear just before the tide starts moving in or out.

That's just another erroneous theory about crabbing. We have caught numerous crabs in ALL tides this season. Slack being no different. The only TRUE theory about crabbing is....There Are No Theories!!!

My reasoning is that moving water carries the essence from the bait. Crabs sense that up/down current in the water and follow it back to the bait that is in my rings. If the water is not moving neither is that essence from the bait.

Since slack time only lasts about 20 minutes anyway, it's not really worth planning your day around. Stop and eat a sandwich if you think the crabbing will be slow. By the time you're done chewing, the crabs will be back.

I don't plan my day around it. Sometimes I just fish or rebait through it. Last Friday, accounting for the half hour after sunrise which was just before slack tide. With all of that factored I just launched on the other side of it.  The crabs become more active after the sun warms the water a bit as well.
