Once again, I went out and caught my first crab of the year on New Year's Day.

I had entertained the thought of putting some traps (pots) out on New Year's Eve for an overnight soak, but when I arrived at the salt pond the winds were blowing and there were white caps on the water.  My pirogue is not made for those conditions, so I changed my mind.  I did talk with a man who was taking his adult son for his first crabbing trip and he told me that the crabs had been running.  He had a least one 6 inch crab and told me his son had missed more that he scooped.  This gave me hope for the next day.

I arrived by 7:30am and put out 7 hand lines.  On my first pull, I landed my first crab of the year.  It was too small to keep, but I took it as a sign.  I shouldn't have.  I crabbed until 9:30am and landed a least a dozen crabs.  All were small.  I did catch one that, with its very long points, was legal to keep.  Normally, I would not have thought about keeping this crab, but I needed a taste, so he made it to my grill.  I will say, that for such a tiny crab, it was packed with tasty meat.

I hope you all have a great 2025.

Way to go Craig! It's fun getting out there early and being able to post a report of a catch, even if it was only 1.  I have never tried grilling crabs before, I will have to get you to give a demonstration at the Get Together this year.  Looking forward to seeing you there my friend.

I agree. I don't like boiled crabs even a little bit. The southern guys may have the shrimp and crawfish down, but the "boil the crabs in a big pot" guys have a LOT to learn about cooking crabs properly. Everything tastes the same when it comes out of that big boil pot, and unfortunately, that taste is not close to good. But to each his own. The southern way is apparently more about "speed" and less about "quality". If they want the quality crabs, they can come up our way. Otherwise, they can just eat a piece of corn that tastes like fish water, or eat a crab that tastes like potato starch. I guess it doesn't really matter though when a 10 lb box of Zatarain's Crab Boil powder is dumped in the pot and everything suddenly tastes like that.
NOT ME!!! I'm out. Steamed crabs, with Old Bay, is the true American way. And unless you are lazy, as most people are, pre-cleaned crabs is the only way to go as well.
But I do agree that the grilled crab sounds delicious too.

I have never eaten a pre cleaned crab, I will have to try that this year. It looks good, I just haven't tried it yet. I want to try the grilled crab as well.

No guts, no glory!  Bring on the mustard and the gunk.  Nothing better than scraping out the "meat" that's in the inside corners of the shell!
I love me some Wallco, but I gotta draw the line!   :grin3:
