Went north many times for bear and moose...to ND for waterfowl and upland.
Never went west for Elk, so I'm envious.  I hope you have a great trip and fill the freezer with your trophy bull.

Yep.....Have played the draw game many times for rifle.....But I have only been once in Colorado.....I turned down a 250" bull the 1st day of a ten day hunt....what a mistake......never saw another bull...temps were up in the 90's and activity stopped!

Sounds like your doing the right thing....next time I go, I will go with a bow and plan on attest a two week hunt.....

Best bet is to pal up with one of the locals of the state your hunting.....This way you can keep informed of the weather and the rut.....weather really affects the rut, and you want to be their at the peak.....I would want my last day of the hunt to be the peak of the rut....every years it varies 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the location.

If temps are high, and have been high....you may want to consider going up in elevation...8,000' to 10,000'......when the weather breaks and starts getting colder....then start hunting lower....

If your using a guide.....be careful....the one I had couldn't hunt a field mouse...got me lost...had no game sense at all....their are allot of crooked outfitters out their........best bet is to call every reference and all guides.....and take every negative response serious...make notes of what the outfitter says verses the guide....you may be shocked at the different bull they tell you.....because hey...its your money to lose...
Good Luck ! let us know how you make out....

Been to Durango! The small steam train is there. Hunted not too far from there in the 80's for elk. We all got em, but nothin big. Was early Oct, rifle and we were in a blizzard.
I'm niether proud nor embarrassed, I'm a man....Sometimes I sh!t my pants.....It's part of the deal.
