Hey guys,

I have been lurking a bit and you all got me psyched about Mattamuskeet so I went with a buddy and his kids this past Sunday. They were on and off throughout the day. From about 7 to 11am we caught 30 nice crabs. These are the best of the day. Very few light crabs for the day. Most were pretty full.

As the sun was coming up swarms, and I mean thick, were right around us. I would say they were tightly packed in a sphere about 20' in diameter - you could see it coming from a distance. If they were over you you could not see much, but if you walked a few feet in any direction you were ok.

After about 30 minutes of that they were gone. Bug spray was a must.

Hey Kingcrabber , it sounds like he's describing the sea-gulls that come around when you're crabbing .........

I think I would rather deal with the gulls instead of the bugs.   ;) ;)
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, a crab in one hand, a beer in the other, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW--What a Ride!"

Just got back from my first trip to Mattamuskeet today. We were staying in Duck and heard about it and thought we'd check it out. Only stayed for an hour but got 8 nice fat crabs. Some had to be close to 8".

I read hear about the canals. How can I find out how to get to those?  We just pulled off the road on Rt 94 at one of those places that has the benches and a little pier.

Is the crabbing slow in the spring? Seems like from what I read, fall is a good time.

There were some bugs but I did not get bit.

Will try again my next visit.

Thanks for any info.
