I live in Delaware and my in-laws live in S. Nags Head. Anyone have suggestions on where I can drop a few traps to catch some crabs instead of me going over to Wanchese and buying them?  I was thinking about walking out of the inlet and dropping a string there but, I'm not sure if they'll be there.
Any suggestions would be a huge help.

Thanks.

I would try down there at the causeway there at Whalebone or down there near Pirates Cove. Also down there  to the old bridge etc that goes into Manns Harbor. Just iders ;D If not I guess you'll be buying some, before you go that route look up "genecrabman" on here he's sorta closer to ya. He might be able to hook ya up with some crabs.

The bridge at pirates cove is a nice comfortable place to crab but....if you want the big ones take the 90 min trip to Lake Mattamuskett!   I love that place!  7+ inch crabs are common and have seen multible 8 1/2 inchers in some baskets.  Only drawback is the 12 crab limit there.  Goodluck!

Now I'm starting to hear rumors of you need a license besides the new Salt Water fishing license to crab??? It's not available to nonresidents of N.C.???
Please someone tell me this is not true.

I just got back from oak island. I didnt think you needed any kind of license if you were just there on vacation.  hmmm, a license for surf fishing?

New law went in effect Jan 1st of 2007  :o It sucks and I don't like the way they nickel and dime ya. BUT if ya want to fish and fish often, one must pay their dues :(

For more license information, please call the DMF at 252-726-7021 or 800-682-2632
After reading the guidlines, I did'nt see a license that out-of- staters can by that is a CRFL only for lifetime purchases that cost $500. MY BEST BET IS FOR YOU GUYS TO CALL THE ABOVE NUMBER

ok, re: a license.....you need a license for ALL fishing unless you are doing it at the piers. You do NOT need a license for crabbing if you are using rings or traps. The NPS states that if the crab has a chance of getting away, then it is considered chicken necking and thus do not need a license. You DO need a crabbing license if you are using any kind of pot, either commercial or the smaller rec ones. since the crab does not have a chance of escaping once its in the pot. And, if you are using the smaller rec pots, you also need to use pink buoys.

WRONG !! Reread the law bro! For those wishing to fish off a ocean pier, please call that pier in advance to see if they have a blanket license. (it is a option for them to purchase)(also pertains to charter boats) If they do not have one, then you are responsible for a saltwater fishing license. I would think that most pier owners would by the license, as doing so would still maintain fishing business for them (it's $4.00 per/linear ft)

What is a small rec pot??? Isn't the same as a regular comm pot? If you are thinking of topless or pyramid traps they are unlicensed since they are hand activated. Comm type pots with the CRFL you are only allowed 5 per license and must be name tagged with a hot pink (pink) buoy. Still don't see a out-of-state license for the saltwater fishing
