how much is eel selling for??

     Thinking of droping over a couple dozen (extra) eel pots to make a few more $$, problem is I have always just caught enough for personal use and never bought any, nor do I know of anybody that sells them local. So how much is eel selling for salted and cut??

We had a discussion on eeling here maybe on baits.. The last batch I bought last summer was 10 lbs and 30 dollars at  The Sports shop on Rt 301 in Waldorf MD. Dont know if they still have any . Anglers does not at the bay bridge ..probably caue they goit no body suppliing it. If you have a commercial license to sell this bait you will get good money for it..Anglers . the Sports shop in Md.. Wye River crabbers.. no license..catch for yourself what you need.

     Thanks Darrell, I remember when we discussed what to bail eel with, but not the price. I usually catch 2 or so per pot per day, so I figure with 24 more pots I could supply a couple of crabbers with one of the best trotline baits while making a few extra bucks.

At a local tackle shop I pay $3.00/lb for eel.... From a local waterman I pay $1.50/lb... When he has them I buy 50-100lbs
and salt them down.

Darrell, are you talking about Freds Sporting good in Waldorf? If so they still have it, that is where I get it when th elocal waterman does not have any..... 5lb bags for 14.99
It hurts getting it from them and they are so small, they pop off the line if you are not carefull when you pull the slack out of your line.....

     Yes I eel in the pax. using 1/2 of a white crab for bait in each pot. My license allows 50 pots and I'm only running 12 -20 right now, it gives me something to do during the ride in from trotlining.

There is a thread in here from someone saying you can buy eel from asian supermarkets. Those stores are every where. Don`t know how much it costs though.

localwaterboy, what is a white crab and how good is your catch using it?? up here we use horseshoe crab, but the price of 'em aint worth eeling.

     white crab meaning a poor (not much meat) blue crab. A eel will eat just about anything though, clam, manoe, razorback, fish, crab, ect. whatever you have available from the water they are in. I just save a few of my white crabs and mash them up some with a stick and throw em in the pot. The only other thing I have had better luck with bait is a razorback but they are rather pricey when I can just save a few crabs for bait. Next time you catch a few extra crabs try them in a pot or two, you'll be supprised!

yeah, i've had luck using crushed spider, calico, and green crabs.... but i dont think i could bring myself to use a tasty blue crab for eel bait!!

I see you do have a license..in that case fill up a 5 gallon bucket salt eel. Take it to Talbot County figure about a hundred and a quarter cash for it. Here how the fellow I know did it. He kept a 55 galon drum with heavy salt brine in it The eels he caught he put in the drum and the heavy brine puts them to sleep.After they sit for a while .(couple weeks at that ) he pulls them out and puts them into salt. The crabber will cut it up and thats the best way cause they have their own way of how long each piece should be. Now that was years ago as his catch for the last 20 +years till he retired went to George Robberecht's eel operation at Mt. Holly Va. G R is  gone now and his son has also gave up the eel  business. No horseshoe crab bait the biggest reason. But hey catch a couple of 5 gal buckets at your lesiure and thats 250 in your pocket!  RNC I do belive thats Freds where I got the eel 5 lbs for 15 and 10Lbs for 30 dollars is the deal. Glad to hear they still have it..I will pick some up to restock my supply.

Darrell you're on glue if you think you can get 125.00 for a five gallon bucket of eel..... it is great bait but it aint gold buddy. Last time I got it (a month ago) I got two five gallon buckets (50 lbs) actually weighed 63lbs and I paid 75.00 for it.....

The Potomac is full of eels.. sounds like you have a good connection ..oitherwise it would be about 180 bucks at the store for that eel. Good for you.. was not trying to be snotty, sorry if that came accross wrong... I'd just hate to have the guy expect 125.00 for a bucket of eel that is going for 25.00.... come on, I'm not that bad of a person dude!
If he were Freds Sporting goods then yea, that bucket of eel would bring him more but it's hard to tell.....

     I was figuring about $2 a pound and packing them in 10 lb containers. Does this sound fair?? It's not realy worth it if it goes much below that (kinda like being a commercial crabber).
