How do i catch lobster and shrimp? Do you have to go way out and what do you use?

Joe Crabs

KC would make some excellent chum, a very oily smelly bait. ;D
Crabbing, enjoying the water, meeting new people, making new friends, that's what it's all about.

How come i never get a serious reply.  :-\

Well, you have to go out far for lobster, they are caught in pots, kinda of like a crab pot but more complex.

You can snorkle for shrimp in some places but not around your area, NC on southward. Most shirmp are caught on Shirmp bats that dredge the bottom.

Now thats a serious reply

crazy crabber

Or you can go to Shoprite! ;D Your looking at two 5 pound lobsters and one hungry 200 pounder. :)

For the shrimp they do dip net them recreationally in South Carolina I don't think that you can catch either shrimp or lobsters in shore around here.

I have seen some posts concerning divers getting lobsters at the tubes of the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel.  I also have heard of them being caught around the off shore wrecks.

Back in the 60's they used to lobster out of Chincoteague and OC but the catch dwindled to zero in the 90's.

In the Florida Keys I use to catch shrimp at night from the base of the seven mile bridge. You Need a strong light to shine on the water and you can see the eyes of the shrimp shine as they swim from the gulf side of the bridge to the Atlantic .. When they are running good you can dip net a five gallon bucket full in a few hours.
Lobster is a different tune. Snorkeling is the ticket looking over the bottom and using a tickle stick to get the lobster to back out of holes they hide in. Lots of fun.
The Florida lobster does not have claws but they still have a great taste.  If you ever get a chance give it a try       Big AL :) ;)

Wow, those are two nice lobsters!!!! I'm HUNGRY!!

I don't know much about either one...but about six months ago, I was watching the Outdoor Network and they were showing how to shrmp...I can't remember everythiing, but I do know that they spread a LOT of disgusting CHUM and then came back a while later, hoping the scrimps (as my PJ calls them) would have arrived and then they were scooping them up in nets.

Have fun if you decide to indulge...and I'd love to join you!!!

If you're a certified diver, you can go on a dive boat and get lobster off of OC, MD.  Just make sure you grab the crusher claw.  ;D
This is how it's going to go.  After I kick your A$$ i'm going to run you through the wood chipper and put you in containers in the freezer to use in my crab pots!  The really sad part?  You let an old man kick your A$$!!!

:( No shrimp around the Chesapeake Bay area.. maybe down Carolina way. I hear the drag  a box for them. If cajun crabber was arounde here he would tell you. As for lobster I have a old Maryland state recipie book and yes in it it shows a lady off Ocean City in sucba gear to catch lobster. I dont know about today.. there only mud out there. that said Martin Seafood in OC MD has lobsters smaller ones at that that are supposed to come from out in the OC area. Now most lobster comes from New England where the bottom is rocky and the water colder. That said they are a regulated item and a serious license is needed with serious fines for those who have not.

I don't have any specific details about it Jack, but I can put you in touch with people that do - Divers Den, Harford Rd., Baltimore. Ask for dive master George Lyndall. I was certified about 7 years ago and those guys talked about spear fishing and lobstering the wrecks off OCMD. I believe you can keep (1) per day. I don't know about size/sex restrictions. They can only be caught by hand  :o. You blind them with your dive light, reach (quickly) into the hole and grab them by the top shell, pulling it forward while pushing down so the claws are forced under the body and dragging in the sand until you get it clear of its hole.

Are they still in the same spot?  Surprised they are still in business thought that area was all condo's.  I can remeber me and my Dad talking to the lobster boaters at the wharf.  That is exactly where I was refering to.  OC shipped a lot of lobster.  There was another outfit across the creek from Martin's.  Do you remeber their name?  I can't recall it....

Jack, there are some nice lobsters on the wrecks off of OC.  Even in VA on the Marine Electric.  Some of them are huge.  When going after them, look for them in nooks along the wreck.  When they are frieghtened they back into the nook.  Grab the crusher claw with one hand then with the other hand push down on the tail (because they try to lodge themself in the nook) and pull.  Just make sure that you don't see any egg sponge mass underneath.
