Just returned from Chincoteague bay. My fiance and I clammed for a total of about 90 minutes on Saturday morning and we harvested 107 clams. We quit because we had enough for what we wanted to do. We were getting 3-4 per hole in some cases. Water depth was about 2 feet.

Nice report, rgminer!

So, what did you do with the clams???

rgminer

After we got them back to the house, I set them in fresh water for 30-45 minutes and allowed them to "spit", reducing the amount of grit they had. I seperated the cherrystones and chowders. The cherystones were steamed along with 3 pounds of shrimp and 6 ears of corn. They were served along with a couple dozen steamed crabs and ice cold beer.

The chowder clams were shucked and divided equally into containers and frozen for chowder in mid winter.

I am returning in 2 weeks to get a few hundred more.  I am sure there are more since we clammed in basically a  1 acre area....

That's a nice catch and good that you are saving some for the winter!!  Nothing like a nice pot of clam chowder on a cold, blustery January day..and Farmers Almanac says we are in for some blizzards this year!

Thanks, Crabpop for  how to actually clean them...ick...but I've been throgh worse!!
