Hello everyone! We're new to this board. We found this place searching for Crab recipes at Google. Anyhow, we just cooked up some tasty lil critters that we caught today at Lake Mattamuskeet here in NC! We didn't get our limit, but what we caught was good enough for the wife & myself. (13) We could have caught more but why be selfish right? We tried first at the old pump station, but they weren't hungry there. But we found a honey hole. If you go there from the Fairfield side, drive all the way across the lake. At the very last canal (culvrit) on the right side of the road, there are lots of big rocks under the water. Excellent place for crabs! They have to be 5 inches across the back to keep. All of ours were 6 - 7 inches or larger.  Anyhow this is our report for today! "Happy Crabbing"! Later, Sage & Cher

That is very disappointing Sage, you were at the Waipopan Canal??? It sounds like the crabs got smaller and disappeared if you were, please clarify. ??? I'll hope you weren't or they are going through a shed or maybe the rain drove them into the lake. ???
Crabbing, enjoying the water, meeting new people, making new friends, that's what it's all about.

Disappointing??? Hoss we weren't disappointed at all! We enjoyed every minute of it... Now i've heard about how big the crabs are at Mattamuskeet Lake, just about all my life.  And the ones we caught were about that size. Sure i've seen bigger, but not much bigger. But, actually it wouldn't have mattered to us if we didn't catch one. To us the fun was just in going. Catching a few to bring home was just extra.  ;)  Sage & Cher

Not dissing you bro and i am glad you had a great time, If you read the reports you will know what I am talking about. There are more and bigger crabs at the canal locks and out to the lake. Didn't realize where you were at first and thought there was some drastic change. We expect the crabs to be larger on our next trip, not smaller. Glad you had a great time because we did. ;)

Sage, about 15 of us from the forum are going down to Lake Mattamuskeet on October 9 for a day of crabbing and then we're going to enjoy a crabfest that evening. Most of us are staying at the Hotel Engelhard, that's where we'll have the crabfest.

You are more than welcome to join us! As a matter of fact, EVERYONE from this forum is welcome to join us! We have people driving down from as far as Pennsylvania and New Jersey for the event. You'll get to meet new friends and see the faces behind the names here.

Jump over to the "Festivals & Events" board on the forum and look for the Lake Mattamuskeet II topics. Please reply to the "Head Count" thread so that I can put you on the list!  :)

Hello all, Just got back from Lake Matty! Twas a little slow today. Wind was blowin out of the NE & it was raining. But we still got our limit (24). Most of 'em were decent size. We didn't go to the canal locks on the SE side, we stayed on the Lake road. Thinking about going to wiapoppin tomorrow. "see what happens". But it was a good day anyhow. Later folks,  ;) Sage & Cher
