Have the tackle shop do it for you! There is a right way and a wrong way of spooling a reel with fresh fishing line.

Well, I'll offer this.  If you can, get a cast net and learn how to use it.  A 7.5 foot net will cost about $35 but you can get smaller for much cheaper and they're easier to learn with...  Also get a bubbler/livewell set up for a 5 or 7 gallon bucket or whatever you can do.  [Sam Hill], get bait everytime you run out if you want to and can't keep them alive long.  Then, cast net up some menhaden and small live white perch around the piers (very easy to do) then go live lining with a big split shot and a big circle hook about 3 foor away from your splitshot.  That is the "potty mouth rockfish candy" method  ;)   8)  Old as the hills... worked nice for years 'round my way!  Good for in the rivers.

Hope the cast net live fish idea suits your needs as it sounded like you were leanin toward live bait etc...

then open up a bait shop selling minnow and spot for live liners....

vary retrieves on artifical lures.  small spoons, rapalas etc burn em fast, run em slow stop and start rip it stop.  you want to imitate a injured baitfsh which is an easy meal for old mr rockfish or bluefish.  as for the reel.  I would take the reel apart  spray it out and soak it in WD-40 or break free.  clean up pretty easy.. bu tyou have to know how to strip a reel.. If you don't take it to a repuatbale fishing shop and they can do it for not a lot of money.  if it s getting that seized up you may have to repalce parts/ gears etc.. which may cost close to buying a new reel.  after everytime I ffish in saltwater i take a hose and spray off my gear.  rods and reels.  and then give em a quick shot of wd 40 to keep them form seizing up from the salt and sand.  I have even seen some folks spray WD 40 on their lures as a fish attractant...
