BF - not to get you off track but with most fish -----

if you have a good leader line - all you need is a good glove so the line doesn't cut your hand when you pull them out but a net is great to have on hand  ;) ;) :D

but that could rip the hook out of their mouth and you lose them

get a net

You won't need a gaff, trust me.  If your fishin out of a 12' boat, the fish would pull that boat all around.

It is for a fishing kayak, but I talked with my mom and I'm going to be returning it and buying a collapsable net. I like the idea of a collapsable net, and I do agree I wont need it just a waste of room.

I agree: use a net, not a gaff in the bay or near shore.

Gaffs are for very large fish and only for fish you intend to kill & eat.  But I do have a tip for using one as I was a charter boat mate in another life.  DO NOT do as the guys on the Discovery Channel shark tournaments do: gaff a big shark right in the tail!!!

I always cringed when I saw those idiots doing that.  Seriously, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER stick a big fish IN THE MOTOR (tail).  It is the best way to be injured, lose/damage your gaff, damage the boat, get thrown overboard, etc.  It's also a good idea not to bring a live shark on board.  How many videos of people getting bit do you need to see?  We gaffed sharks, hooked up a tail rope and hung them over the side until dead.  Unless you are headed back right after catching one it also keeps the deck clear and the shark fresh.

We always aimed for the head for better control of the fish and to keep from damaging the meat.  If you hold the gaff vertically near the boat with the point out and swing it up and away into the fish, you will keep from gouging the boat if you miss and you will miss less often.
