We have been catching mostly females this week though many are nice fat ones and very few are sponged up. Wish the big boys would come around but they are few and far between for us. I will say that the few we are catching have been from the northern end of our strings. The southern end is all girls. Catches fell off sharply during the big blow last week but things are picking up now.
Experience is something you get right after you need it most.

Might as well get used to it. I know from Morehead City southward it stays females for while, either I am late or the sooks are, but they should be sponged  out, or are you more inland?
Lots of crabbers and crab lovers on here. If you enjoy crabs, lot's of info and good chat about crabs. Why not go ahead and donate to this forum. Deep down after doing research on here and chatting with others, you will find useful info from some new friends.ENJOY!!

We were having a ton of sponges three weeks ago but only a few in the last two weeks. Lots of small males but more than 3/4 females. By the way, we are in Shallotte right behind holden beach, ocean isle area. more than half of my gear is in the water way. Big tides this week have some of my gear roaming with 5/8 irons. Hasn't been a problem yet but today and yesterday things have been wandering.

Had my pots out near Morehead.  Caught 41 crabs not counting sponges.  40 were sooks and one jimmy.  But several of the sooks were 7".
