The numbers are picking up in the river now. Waterway was starting to cool off so I moved a lot of gear into smaller water and the move is paying off the last three days. Caught this nice jimmy the other day (will try to post picture) measured 7 1/4" across the shell and the claws stretched to 18". Crab was returned to the water for seed. I hope I catch some of his kids next year and they are nearly as big.

Do all male crabs down your way where those toupees? Why did you strip it off of him if you were going to toss him back? Do you save the toupees like Indians did scalps?
I wish to die like my father did, in his "sleep" - unlike the screaming passengers aboard the plane he was piloting.

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect.

He's gone nuts  :o IMHO, as dark, large that crab is......I am sure he's near he's death anyways :'( . Only throw back the sponges if you're trying to save a generation of crabs. Large males move up the creek for several things.....one too many females in their general stomping grounds, bad water...or the want the relaxing lifestyle of not moving to fast for their next meal, and to come there to rest in peace. My oldest son just had 3 bushels of jumbo's yesterday from his creek and shallow pots. Moving the rest today, but I can guarantee he didn't throw his jumbo's back ;D
Lots of crabbers and crab lovers on here. If you enjoy crabs, lot's of info and good chat about crabs. Why not go ahead and donate to this forum. Deep down after doing research on here and chatting with others, you will find useful info from some new friends.ENJOY!!

Now I feel like an idiot. I have never seen one this big and really felt I was doing a good thing throwing it back. I do throw back every sponge I catch as I dont feel too good about keeping them. Besides both of my buyers refuse to buy them anyway and I think thats great. Maybe I should have kept the big guy but he would have made about 50 cent difference in my day's pay. If I caught a slew of big ones like that then they would deffinately be packed and sold but this was just one and the good karma will pay off in the future even if my science is flawed.
