i shoot 245 gr powerbelts keeping the charge the same while going to next size up in grs. is a 295,thats 50 more grs and i don't think it will slow down enough to matter. mag. loads not sure about . the box of pyrodex info clearly states to only use mag. loads=150 gr. or 3 pellets in guns meant to handle those loads. i'll chech into that but my sons gun is a bit older,a t/c woods rifle, yes it's inline but i think this gun was made before anyone was shooting 150 grn loads. my gun is a traditions 209,it may be ratede for mag loads. overall it's bullet placment that counts the most if you put the bullet in the ribs just behind the shoulder it will go through, but if your a little off and hit the shoulder you need a little more punch.

ChrisS

Usually, a shoulder hit drops the deer immediately.

I think this "magnum gun" thing is a scam. I believe just about all BP rifles can handle a charge of 150 grains, but the manufacturers remarketed this as new technology to make more money. I have no proof, so I could be wrong.

after butchering the deer my son shot last night i see he did not hit bone in the low shoulder-top of leg shot, nor did he hit ribs directly. the bullet must have blown up on impact as we could only find fragments in flesh and ribs-brisket area. the heart was clearly hit in the bottom point or smaller part i seen that for myself in the gutpile and it was destroyed were it was hit,i guess from fragments, hard to tell. we will go to 295 gr bullets in the future. as for the shot i'll call it good ,deer onlywent 40-50 yards and was in the truck. chris ,don't you have land or hunt pocomoke area,if so it would be good to meet you some time, maybe rifle season as me and my son will be in camp at least part of the week.

Rdbeard,
Im in Princess Anne, and that would be very nice.
Thanks

yeah a lot of the BP bullets are soft alloy or traditionally lead thus more or less flatten on impact that coupled with the low velocity is more or less whacking em with a board.......and the 150 grain / 3 pellet load is max for most inline and hawkin type guns..... also keep in mind the pyrodex pellets are more close to the FFF losse powder versus FF powder.  the finer grain burns cleaner and won't foul as much but also increases presssure.  1000 gr of FFF is = to 90 gr of FF.  usually drop chrage by about 10 gr for = pressure, but I agree most BP's an handle that pressure.....but I would not go to 4 pellets = 200 gr by any means....

what did the bullet look like ????? mine have always gone straight through...powerbelt platinum...silver with black tip...200 some odd grains...smallest they make.and 150 grains 777 pellets.
yea i agree with you, mine  go straight through too most of the time with just 100 grain, except sometimes i get a good ole shoulder stopper shot to prevent the exit hole.

this evening should be a good evenin with this rain finally movin out for the people on the eastern shore...only bad thing is the warmth, but the system out should have the deer moving.

I would say they will move better just before the fornt versus just after the front, plus it tends to get windy after the front usually out of the north west.. :-\
kinda the same with fishing.. post front days suck.. usually blue bird and breezy.... plus it is kinda warm and they have had presssure for the past 7 days now....

im with you dog, deer seem to move more 24hrs before a front comes through, just an observation i have noticed

i like to be in the woods as soon as it stops raining especialy if it's been raining hard. the deer stay bedded for the most part when it rains hard and want to get up shake off and move around alittle, good time to be there.

I prefer after, esp after a long day of raining, or sharp cold front

ha i hear that, im experiencing a crazy ex gf and her cacklin through texts and facebook are nerve wrecking, i mean who texts someone out of the blue "you're an a *word*", and says thats for talking to a mutual friend whose a lady about jobs.  i told her i wasnt arguing, and then she proceeds to block my number and "unfriends/blocks" me on facebook again.  Last time i checked I am 22 not 7, even though i miss those days i mean trick or treating, beg the parents for stuff.
