after a passing glance, the crab regs in that seem to still be in effect but given that the document is half a decade out of date, i'd stick with the 06-07 regs...

The Marine Resources Act of 2000 is current law, with very few changes, and none that affect crabs. The published regulations limit recreational crabbers to "Not more than two pots or traps per person, with owner's name attached to a yellow float, for recreational purposes." You have to read the law to realize that you can fish as many collapsible baskets as you wish.

SECTION 50-5-15. Definitions.

(38) "Pot" has the same definition as "trap" herein contained.

(57) "Trap" is an enclosed device used for taking fish, constructed to facilitate entry but prohibit or restrict exit of fish and is also called "pot".

So a collapsible basket that only catches crabs when you pull the string is not "an enclosed device," and does not "prohibit or restrict exit." You do that when you pull it up.

So there is no closed season in SC, none of the water? WOW I'm moving to SC somewhere around Lemon Island and gonna crab year round.   JUST KIDDING, I WOULD'NT MOVE THERE.

So if I'm using collapsible triangular traps, do I need the yellow floats or no?

What if you're not leaving the pots overnight and always stay with it, do you still need the yellow floater?

IN beaufort,sc you can have a brightly colored bouye , yellow is for a non lisence crabber, your allowed 2 pots before obtaining a license, we spray painted ours hot pink with black letters and numbers! Ive always seen personal crab pots that are white and yellow....where i crabbed in port royal and beaufort, we dropped 125 daily and we were also in with ScDNR. Some or most of our Traps were tagged by DNR and they would ride along with us every few months and get information from the crab population such as water depth how much we caught, ect....and your pots must be regulated, meaning built by regulation w/ rings built in so sertin fish and other animals dont get caught in the traps, we had a lot of trouble with dolphins also getting into our pots along with minks from the marsh! we would get a dead one every so many months..We leave our pots unattended up to 5 days, well we never let our pots soak that long , to many escape and too many predators have a chance to pounce your trap, most of the time when they soak that long , you pull up dead crab or a couple alive feeding on the dead crabs. with those triangular traps? i havnt use them before....there more of your string and pot by hand so no you wouldnt even need a float for that as long as you use off a personal dock. Because by reg. you cant use a commercial pot within 100yrds to a personal or public dock. and ive seen people use those trianlge pots on docks and piers, so you dont need a float for those at all......
