They get them on Fridays (maybe late Thursday nights). Usually gone by Saturday afternoon, so you've gotta move fast. This last weekend no one got any though, so it is a bit of a crapshoot.

I recommend going early and getting breakfast at Crossroads Diner on Walnut Hill. You will not regret it. Best breakfast joint in Dallas.

I've been trying to get the blue gold for a few weeks and keep coming up empty handed. I'll let you know when stores start getting them. Summer can't get here soon enough!

I haven't had any since January.  My regular spot said they will have some may 1st.

Found a place that will deliver from the gulf. They need a weekly commitment though. I might be able to commit every other week, but weekly seems a bit much.

mitchellseafood

Of course that crosses my plate on the day my husband tells me we might be relocating.  I would easily do a weekly commitment.  I get them weekly when I can regardless.

My fingers are crossed that we get relocated to coastal Florida where this wouldn't be a problem.

 :)

I would love them weekly - I even asked for the largest males they had - but my wife is not as nuts about them as I am.

My husband just laughs and ignores my habit.  I started my business just to have an excuse to have crabs literally everyday :)

And am working to do that again.

What would be the commitment? Quantity wise?

buggysdad

It's that time of year where it is very hard to get them. Did you ever get your business started?

buggysdad

It's that time of year again! Actually, I'm always craving the blue goodness, but they haven't been in stock this winter. I'm heading out tomorrow with my brother to hopefully find some. I'll report back with my findings.

Went to Super H Mart & Hong Kong Marketplace today. Both had a good selection by DFW standards. Mostly female at Super H, so we went to HKM. If they looked picked through, ask for more from the back. They've got boxes of the little guys.

Does anyone know if Hmart will steam them for you?? I've never steamed blues myself, and dont have the needed steam pot! Also does anyone know the pound to dozen ratio?

Thanks!!!

If you have a soup pot.. You can steam crabs. Use a collapsing veggie steamer insert or crush beer cans and put them on the bottom of the pot.. Just layer the crabs on top of the cans.

Get some Zatarains and boil them up.

It looks like it has been quite some time since the original list was compiled... does anyone have any leads on crabs within a reasonable drive from Waco?

Hey Matt,

I try to keep the list updated yearly to help people. I don't check every store every year, but I do keep tabs on the best suppliers and write about those experiences in this thread.

I realize this is an old thread but I found it while searching on Google and wanted to pass on my experience from a couple days ago. I grew up in MD and have lived in TX now for 11 years. I've done the ordering online for steamed and been disappointed with the size and cost of delivery. I will try the Hongkong markets next but this last week, 5/23/16 I called Cap'n Dave's in Plano to place an order for 1/2 bushel live to pickup on 5/28/16. They confirmed with me on the phone that the crabs were all Male and would be premium 1's (apprx 6.5 inch). I drove an hour on 5/28 to pickup my order and starred into a box of all Female crabs. The employee who was showing me the order didn't even know how to tell the difference from a Male or Female. I expressed my displeasure and he left to speak with the manager/owner whoever it was. He tried to 'sell' me on the order stating that he eats a mix of Male and Female and they are limited to what the watermen deliver to them. I understand harvesting, done it many times myself through the years living in MD, and you don't know what you're going to get until the pot is emptied. They should have given me a call when they received their order Thurs/Fri whenever it was and told me they only had Females. Maybe they thought a stupid unknowing Texan would pay $6.99/lb for Females. The end result was a very disappointed shopper wasting 2 hours on a Saturday and returning home with an empty cooler.

I only hope anyone else shopping for Live Blue's sees this and takes caution. I also tried calling Rex's but they are closed for remodeling. I don't know if that is a current message as of May 2016 or not, they didn't give dates in the message.

Have to try the Hongkong market on Pioneer which is pretty close or the one in Dallas. I can't believe it's this difficult to find crabs that I'm sure are being farmed from Louisiana and Houston. I'll drive hours each way to find a reliable source. I just can't stomach paying $80 for FedEx overnight shipping anymore.

Thanks for the heads up. Hong Kong in Dallas is still our go-to place. We've gotten crabs multiple times this summer - all males - but no SUPER JUMBOS are to be found here. Too busy shipping those to Maryland.  :P

Hmmm...i've got a lot of coworkers in Irving TX.  They offered me a job down there...but the lack of blue crabs was a factor...

anyways $80 shipping...hat's tough.  Have you ever tried to get a place to ship to a fed ex facility and you pick it up there?  I've done this when ordering overnight live saltwater fish.  Basically you need to be at the facility when it opens at 9am so as not to void the Live-guarantee.  I'm wondering if any of the retail crab places do the same.

There are a couple guys that I bought live blue crab from in DFW. They were set up at the Coppell farmers market which I think has closed down.. But now they are mostly mobile making stops in Dallas Ft Worth. They sell by the pound and bushel I remember paying $4lb a pound for their #2 crabs. In talking with them they make weekly trips from Lousiana to DFW bringing back shrimp and crabs.
I have their Facebook page

You can find live blue crabs at most Fiesta Markets in Dallas. I know for sure the Fiesta on Ross and the Fiesta on Buckner have them each Wednesday during season.
