Crab Pot Buoys

I see the DNREC requirement for an "all white" buoy on crab pots with your name and address. Do they really have to be white or can they be opaque like a car wiper washer fluid bottle?

I think they want all the criminals to be a able to easily identify it's just a Rec guys stuff that wAy they won't feel so bad when they steal Them.

Yeah, I heard that crabs and/or pots get stolen alot. What do commercial crabbers have to use? My plan is to set a couple pots, then go off some distance so I can still keep an eye on them and drop several traps and do some line crabbing, then come back at the end of the day and pull the pots. Really, what do you do if someone messes with your pots??

the best thing to do is to tie a cinder block to the end of your line and make sure you put a couple treble hooks on the line they wont be pulling any pots for a while after that.

That might work, but I'm sure that's illegal too. Just like setting booby traps on your posted "No Tresspassing" property. And besides, the jerk now has my full name and address from the buoy!! $:-\$ Don't know if I like that idea either. Think I'll pass on that one, but thanks for the reply.

Any other ideas out there?

Called "cinder potting"... Tie your buoy line to a cinder block. Tie the line to the pot to the cinder block. Leave enough line between the cinder block and the pot so that the cinder block will come into site without the pot. The poacher will see the block and drop it back. You on the other hand continue to pull the block up and grab the line to the pot.

Hopefully they will see the block but not the line. The block will come into view way below the surface. Course this won't work in crystal clear water...

there's really no way to stop poachers, but this way tends to work pretty good. BUT if a poacher pulls up a block, he'll probably get pissed and cut your line, losing your pot forever. If you're in shallow water or near a bank, i recommend putting your pot somewhere you'll remember and be able to retrieve. Lucky for me mine was near the shore and at low tide i went back out and grabbed it (and it was full

as far as what to do with poachers, use you're judgement and do whatever fits the situation. I've only caught one in the act, or minutes after, and he was dumb enough to stay there, with my pot next to him out of water. A complete dumba$$ and much smaller then me, I calmly took my pot back (my buoy was long gone cause he cut that off to try and claim my pot was his) took my crabs back, cut two of his lines, told him not to touch my $hit again, he apologized, I left.

Wouldn't it be so much more easy to set in a duck blind and wait for the poacher.............Then just SHOOT HIM in the HEAD !!!!!!!!!!

I have thought about tying my line to a stake in the bank if your in a creek. And if your good tie 50 foot of line to a weight and stretch it out then drag the bottom with a hook to retrieve your line and pull your pot. But you have to know where you left it. Also this is illegal in De so I would never try this method!
