Greetings Crabbers,

Went out to the pier on Hunting Island this morning as tide was coming in (~ 10a-12p).  Saw several little kids pulling up dozens of crabs with pots and ring nets.  The pier is too high for chicken-necking, so I was out of luck.  Tried to fish live mullet and mud minnows.  The only things biting were small whitings and some little sharks that were tearing up peoples' lines. 

Went back to the house we're renting, which is right on the harbor river (on Harbor Island) and threw our necks out right where the river meets the St. Helena Sound at about 1 pm when the tide was just starting to go out.  We pulled about 2 dozen good sized crabs out of the water in about 2 hours.  They were absolutely delicious.  I am usually in Maryland, and I have to say these were much better than what I pull out of the Chesapeake.  Kudos to SC for having tasty crabs.

I'm still trying to catch a f-ing red drum or cobia while I'm down here, but the fishing has not been particularly good. Crabs to the rescue.

The cobia are in Broad River but you will need a boat or charter a local guide. As for redfish try those mudminnows and small mullet fishing on bottom or a trout float rig. I use a 1/4 ounce jig head. Just hook the mud minnow through the lips and slowly drag across the bottom. A flounder or redfish will hit it. Saturday I caught 15 large trout with shrimp in Sapelo Sound about 50 miles south of where you are.
