Can anyone tell me what are the required safety items for a kayak?  Obviously a pfd but not sure what else I need to pack.  Also are there any other safety concerns for kayakers in the riverways that I should know about, like haveing a flag for better visability, etc?

Sorry, this was supposed to be on the rules and regs page.

My main concern is visibility, you want other boaters to be able to see you from a distance.  I have a bicycle flag that I fly anytime I'm on the water.  A kayak sits below eye level of many boats, so when you're crabbing in creeks with high grasses around, the flag is visible, even when you're not.  Of course that rarely slows down the jetski gang.  I also carry a waterproof whistle on my PFD, a horn, a good dive knife, a paddle leash, a drybag for your phone/wallet.  Another thing I added was SOLAS tape on the hull and paddle blades and rigged a white 360 pole light for the stern, for low-light occasions.  Hope this helps.  Stay safe
If it weren't for running in circles, I'd get nowhere.

There ain't no morals to these stories at all
And everything I tell you, you can bet will be a lie
