Seine net for crabs?

Does anyone know if it's legal in NJ to keep crabs caught using a seine net?

Sounds strange, but in NJ a bait net lic is required to keep crabs, used to be $10 + $2 fee Pete

    yes  in nj  you  cannot  seine  for crabs  BUt   YOU CAN SEINE  FOR BAIT    with the proper license
    the seine can not  be any longer than 50 ft x  4-5 ft       and  you can keep any crabs  as a by catch

Interesting. Is that true only for crabs, or is it also legal to keep other by-catch (e.g., fish) caught in a bait seine, provided that you have the NJ bait net license and the catch in question would be legal to keep if caught on rod & reel or by other conventional means (in-season, meets minimum size requirements, etc.)?

I never use chicken as a bait for crabbing, I use bunker or any other types of fish that I have caught and saved. When I see chickens swimming in the bay or rivers then I'll start using them for bait. The state should ban the use of chicken as bait, it isn't good for the ecosystem of our bays and rivers.

There are plenty of animals and birds that die and end up in the water whole.  Those who use chicken don't use chicken poo, they use only the meat and bones.  What makes chicken bad for the ecosystem?  Crabs and fish seem to like chicken just fine.  I'll bet any leftover bait I throw in the water is gone within 24 hrs.

tabman, your outboard is worse than chicken for bait. anything thats biodegradable won't hurt the bay.

Chicken is only bad for the ecosystem if you don't take it out of the package (or bucket if using KFC). If you catch a chicken in a seine net, I recommend pulling out the liver and using it for catfish before crabbing.

so, chickens are legal to keep if caught in a seine net. are they salty after cooking?

I have a  50 ft seine and have used it for years... when did it become illegal to seine for crab in a crab seine???

You really gotta check the old posts on this. These rumors were started by bait shops that sell over priced bunker. And that's a fact. And I see chickens swimming in upper Barnaget Bay all the time. Or at least they taste like chicken. Plovers?

so I guess I should stop using my not so favorite mother in laws meatloaf  Recently there were Deer found swimming in the ocean in Manasquan Beach. I guess I should ask my buddy for some venison to throw in my bait holder
