OK I was at the PX on Base yesterday and was looking at Traps and they have, a Trap that is 12X18 and lays flat when loading it for transport but when in use and placed into the water it is not in the flat stage but up in the box stage but its round and the crabs get in though the hole but can't get out. I have a Life Time Fishing License for Fishing and Hunting (Fishing for Salt & Fresh waters). I'm only planing to use this for when I go fishing placing one out when I go fishing and picking it up when I'm done fish but it this trap legal or not reading the rules it sounds like it has to be flat when in the water? :help:

Gunny,  I am sure you already got the answer for this but I'll go ahead let ya know.  I too have seen the mesh traps at the PX.  By NC law it is ok to use a crab trap that requires you to be there with it, eg. pyramid's, crab rings.  To use those which are classified as crab pots you need a Recreational use of Commercial Fishing Gear Lisc.  be warned though I watch a guy using that exact pot receive a citation because it is not legal to use those because they do not have cull rings on them.  If you would like a legal one for a reasonable price I suggest East Coast Sports in Surf City.
