Howdy, fairly new here. Anyone crab (or have experience) the St. Johns around Palatka or the inter-coastal around Crescent Beach, commercial or rec? Looking for advise of any kind. Have a pontoon and looking at setting maybe 5 traps in the morning and picking them up in the evening on our way in. Local seafood store I buy crabs from in Palatka gives me a lot of discouraging advise about low lifes stealing from traps.  Not sure if they just want me to keep buying their crabs instead of catching my own or not. Anyhow, any advise is appreciated.

I don't have any experience crabbing the St. Johns river but they are there. You will have to experiment and try different places to fiend them.
There are a lot of low lifes everywhere and they will steal your gear if not watched. Good luck when you go!
Retired in paradise!

Thanks for the help Shellfish. What size traps are you using? Any suggestion on who sells them? Understand here in Florida rec crabbers are restricted to 5 traps at a time. Any restriction on type?

So, I read all the advice (thank you) and  found a boat load of used traps in Inverness on Craig's List about 80 miles SW, $15 each. Called the guy and said I would take 5 and be there in two hours. Got as far as Citra and the rear end on my "91 F-350 dually froze and snapped an axle. Like all my toys, I am getting old and require more and more maintenance. I may go back to playing checkers. Actually, decided to buy a new truck and run the dually through the auction. The Inverness guy still has traps advertised. Will try it again next week.

ACFISHERIES - ever frequent the Wench's Brew? Haven't been there in a decade. Don't even know if it is still there.

When I was a kid it was Happy Helens, then it became the Palms Tavern, Outback, Alley Cats(strip club, then the Wenches Brew.
It's had a few more names/owners since then and is now Backwater Fins.
