spent 1994-2004 on the eastern shore (Queenstown area)...there were a few turkeys, but only in certain areas...went back to visit in 2012-2013 and they were everywhere ......... but folks tell me they are not seeing as many nowadays.....seems to be a population decline thru out the east....

  thoughts or observations ???

That pretty much is what I been noticing around the area.  ???

the raccoon, fox and coyote explosion in the past couple years.  they love turkey and turkey eggs

the recent decrease in a large area of the US does not add up to the most popular opinion of predator damage, however deer seem to be effected w/ the coyote increase.....large populations of turkeys suddenly disappearing or rapidly shrinking seems to point to disease....

and as far as predators,, it's funny that hawks are never mentioned..???

never mentioned because they are federally protected.  nothing you can do about them

When the fur prices go up so will the turkey and waterfowl populations.

Funny that you never hear the coyotes yip at night around here. The times I've been in Colorado you would hear them often. I know they're around, I saw one about 10-12 years ago while shooting Sporting Clays outside of Vienna.

the area we hunt in Southern Maryland is over run with the things.... Had a flock of birds harass us all season... One rainy day sitting in my pop-up blind I counted 53 hens and jakes walk by..... We have a winter season this year and we plan to thin them out a bit...

you may not have to thin 'em.......the turkey populations that i have seen almost disappear overnite happened when the populations were very high..

ChrisS

...yea, im not sure why you have to thin them out....its not like they decimate crops and wreak havoc on everything. Its nice to get out and take advantage of this winter season to put a bird in the freezer, but I wouldn't declare all out assault, shock and all, war on them.

Go call some in and enjoy

try putting up with several flocks of large numbers in your deer woods and watch your corn cost go thru the roof and then come ask me why I wanna thin them a bit.... Not to mention the number of times you see decent deer coming your way and then see the turkeys come in and blow the set up.....  my plan is simple; couple of hunters locate them, first shot will break them up and then subtle locator calls will fill a few more tags. Nobody ever said I wanted to kill em all...

.....Id rather see turkey than deer......but, I understand what your saying. Good Luck

I wish I had a place to turkey hunt. I have never gone and hope to some time in the future. I have seen some in Lochraven and maybe they will open it up some time for turkey hunting. Or if I am able to buy some property on the eastern shore it will have turkeys on it. Just dont know when that will happen.

Tuckahoe has a ton of them.  I used to hunt there before we bought our own land
