Remember that the photo must clearly show a point to point measurement for the crab and the crab must be alive in the photo.

Well I'm sure this wont last long but what the heck. Pretty darn decent for early season in Red Sox land.

Any points for the non typical crusher claw?

Not like it matters. Didn't enter in time (just read the rules). Ill make sure to sign up for the 2017 season.

I have never heard of a crab this size being caught in MA. We are seeing some good size crab here thus far this season, but this one is just a monster...excuse me, a monstah!!

Did you take any other photos of this crab on a ruler? When I look at this is looks like it's starting beyond the 0 mark, but it just may be the point blending in with the top of the ruler.

I thought by using this "clear" ruler I could lay it on the crab and see through it well enough in the photo. That's why I included the close-up shots of the points. But, I can see how this can be misleading because it's two photos composited together. This was my first attempt at it. Ultimately I should make a measuring board. I believe my measurement is as accurate as I originally posted. This crab was quite lively and didn't want to pose for all of the photos I was taking.

(first one of the bunch without a deformed claw - Ha! - why can't we measure using FULL wingspan?)

Very simple...Put one point on a vertical straight edge and the other point on another straight edge..If you have a carpenter square your in business ....Just mark a line and measure..

Again - I know this is no winner but I've been trying to figure out the best measuring with photo method without having an actual board with a sliding ruler on it. The best way I came up with was to drop a vertical (ruler) from both ends of the crab's shell points and then draw a line between them and measure that line. It's essentially the same as using a sliding board with blocks. However, there is a bit of "honor system" needed for this method - or any method for that matter.
Anyway - I got this nice 7 1/2 incher and it's a softshell crab too! I've never seen such large softshell crabs as I have seen this season. Usually I get mostly molting females but this year has been only the large males - really large. Makes for a nice sandwich.

PS. There was 'one that got away' that may have topped the leader board. He's still out there. Broke my net pole (again) trying to get him. Very upset.

I have a contest question/statement

Can a crab with no claws win this contest? It seems so based on the rules. Doesn't make a lot of sense, does it? It feels right to have the claws somehow represented in the overall size of the animal. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

The basis of the measurement to determine the size is point to point. It has nothing to do with claw size or claw span, so I don't see any issue or need to say the submissions need to have one or both claws.
