Made my first Ring Trap

On the Hook, I see two and three corks for flotation of trap lines .... any cork entanglement?

Never even thought about it but I place them just above my swivel or knot and a knot just above the corks so they don't go further up the rope...I guess, no, never had any problem with the corks...

Not much really to repair...Had 1 string break a few trips ago but thought I was gonna lose the ring to guessing a stump or???...Reason I say that is that right next to it I had a ring  that, as far as I know, is still there...Pulled and pulled to no avail...Oh well...Not done yet, but already looking at 'HOW' to make some better...Tried 4 at 24' dia and no difference except harder to pull...

I started building my ring traps a few years back and lost only one. A boater pulled up beside me to talk and wrapped my trap and line around his prop. I told him  no harm done, I will just build another. I use the box traps for comparison once in awhile.

I've lost a few over the last 5/6 years to prop and whatever they were hooked to...Already did 35 rosettes and 1 net...Starting kinda early...Usually wait until New Years to start but was bored already....I have over 100 'idle' and doing 35(or until 'some' component runs out) with 'improvements'...Adding cast net weights to the outer ring to try and eliminate flip overs in heavier current..Been using noodles for floats and while they work ok they are getting compressed where I wrap the line..Would like to find the same 2"/3" diameter in the plastic that commercial are made of...I tried the commercial floats cut in like 2.5" thick and the current pulled a lot under and they were somewhat harder to locate....

Winter's here and running smoothly, so...Whistlewings gave me this idea a few years ago and...well, it's early, so 'might' do it..They'll cost about $2.50 per ring and then a coupling for $1.50 each...So, about $120 total for 30...Getting real close to what my 9Ga and copper plus weights cost, soooo....Just looking to see if anyone here has used this"...Guessing it's NOT going to rust??...

My guess also...Nothing here says galv/ss either...Whistlewings hasn't been on since summer to check with..I could call this supplier...btw, the couplers are advertised as gal...

For couplers I use copper tubing and a hydraulic crimper.

Memphis Net and Twine sells 1/4" Galvanized Spring Steel Approximately 6-1/4" feet per pound. They also sell the couplings.
I use this 1/4" on my ring orders for the crabbers who crab in swift currents. I also use it if someone wants a ring bigger than 20".

Been a while...Finished nets in mid Dec and decided to try 1/4" dia gal from Memphis...Got the wire but was undecided as to whether coupling/copper or weld...Still undecided...Threw these/this together just to see...The wire bent way easier than I thought but still a chore...You can see the difference between the 1/4"/9ga which felt soooo weak after messing with 32- 1/4"x 62" loops...My bait ring is 14" and they're lapping a 'little' but I'm not too worried...May weave the top and loop it 2/3 times to shorten the net...Still got time

One of these from Harbor freight will make your it easier to make rings.

I looked at this previously and figured I'd 'try' bending first...HF is about 20min, so...The vids on Youtube weren't too great for this item and don't feel like buying a 'good' unit...After doing my way, I'll continue my way...Took about 5 min each to do once I figured it out...Might(?) never do these again??

I am with you on bending the wire. I make traps for myself and am not looking to mass produce. It really is easy enough to make a jig if you aim to mass produce. And, enjoyable to catch crabs in your own homemade traps. Again, a special shoutout to the Perfectionist for answering questions.

Well, I'm getting there...Ordered 30# of 1/4" gal and cut/bent about 35 rings...Waited quite a while before deciding to do inner 9ga ring and after doing it I found my ring was overlapping the inner ring some??...I believe my center is a little larger than previous so I'm attributing the lap to that...Anyway, THEN I ordered 30# more of 1/4" and made my outer ring 21.5" instead of 20" to solve the problem...I'm at that stage now...


Added 30 rings done...Now for snoods, lines etc...
