I know that this is probably a shot in the dark as the site primarily deals with Blue Crabs, but here goes. In a few days, traveling overseas for a few weeks, to the warm waters of Hong Kong. Has anyone here ever fished for crabs in those waters and are there any favorite spots? Also, if there are local outlets that sell recreational crabbing equipment there, can you also provide a name or link?

Appreciate all replies.

Thanks!

i have heard of boats go out for squid at night.  Catch and eat em on the boat.  https://jubilee.com.hk/boatrental/activity/%E5%A2%A8%E9%AD%9A%E5%9C%98/?lang=en

not heard of crabbing.  I'm not even sure the crabs they sell there are native to HK.  I believe most are imported in from Australia or similar areas.

90% of the time the place is so hot and humid I just want to hide in the shade or inside a store LOL.  I would suggest visiting a working fishing village like Sai Kung.  Might be a trek depending on what part of HK you are staying in.

here's  a pic of a store selling seafood in Sai Kung.  The water-type crab similar in taste to a blue crab is a speckled crab...it's in the lower right hand of the pic below.  Let me see if i have a better pic.  I just pulled this from google.

@ Hawkeye,

Appreciate your responses. I've actually been to HK dozens of times but never really paid attention to whether there were any crabs at all. I just naturally assumed that they were there given the warm climate and the abundance of 'fishing' villages. I've looked on Youtube and found a lot of fishing videos, but as yet, none with crabs. I've also looked at the HK gov's page https://www.afcd.gov.hk/english/conservation/hkbiodiversity/speciesgroup/speciesgroup_mangrove.html on HK's water's fishery, and there seems to be at least 60 species of crab in HK and surrounding waters. I was just wondering if people actually went after them like we do. It would really rock my vacation if I could spend a day crabbing and get enough for an entire dinner.

good luck!  i sent  you a pm.  I think you will end up buying the crabs from a local monger vs catching them yourself  :P

When I stopped in Hong Kong in 1971 (US Navy) we all hoped we didn't catch crabs.  ::)
