Went crabbing for the first time this year last night.  Got to the North Causeway Side dock at 6:30pm (Low tide) and stayed until 10:30pm.   Caught 7 crabs (5 females and 2 males) 4 of these were in the 5-inch range. about an hour after the tide started pushing in. I also caught 2 huge stone crabs (about 1.5 lbs each). I didn't take a claw and had to throw them back because the season is closed.  There were also 6 Filippino ladies that showed up with crab traps that they had sent from the Philippines and they cleaned up with these. When I left, they had 18  crabs.  What was odd to me was that between me and the ladies we only caught 2 sook females. The rest of the females had not laid eggs yet.  Is this a sign of something or is it still too early?  I know in years past, most of the females that I have caught in July were carrying eggs.

I probably will try again Friday evening.  Has anyone ever crabbed at the Cassen Park or River Front Park in Ormond Beach??  I was wondering if it was worth the drive from Orlando?

Thanks for the report, what type of traps were the ladies using from the Philippines?

They 4 arm arches made of bamboo with the chicken hanging in the middle with the netting in the bottom of the trap.  The rope connected at the top of the arch. The netting was cast net type netting, so the crabs would get caught in it.  It was a pain getting the crabs out of the netting.

Everything is late this year. Maybe because of the cold winter we had? Nice that you got some.

Thanks for the report and glad to hear you were able to get some!
I'm surprised to hear that the ladies caught as many as they did!
