HI

Saw what could be a great vacation in mid August on Brooks Island and thinking about bringing my tin crabber boat from NJ on trailer.

Bought my charts. Pamlico Bay 5 miles north near Haterras Inlet.   Looks like lots of flats.   The chart shows that it's 23 NM to the mainland side. WOW!!!!!!!

That area and time of year any good for blue crabs?

Thank you for any help before I pull trigger.

Capt. Debbie

Thanks.  I was leery about trying a crabbing vacation in Frisco.    You know new places that you never tried before.   And my son bores easily.  So action helps some.

If you ever need any NJ info feel free to contact me.

Captain- try a map search for Frisco- I have no idea where that island is you mentioned but ALL those little creeks and ditches are full of crabs. I'm sure there is a lot of boat traffic in and out of them but you could set on the edges or close to tho9se areas and should do very well. Also- there should be channel markers from each creek  to guide the boats to the channel so all along there should be good as well.

Capt. Debbie

IT's a little corner by Hatteras.

Do you need a crab or fishing license down there?

I am stoked.   Trying to go during week so I avoid a lot of boat traffic.   That's the same up here in NJ.

For crab POTS you do need a license- for traps I believe your covered under your NC saltwater fishing license but I am not sure about that. I know you are unlimited as to the amount of traps you can set. Best thing is to contact the DMF and they will tell you straight out what you need and the rules. I don't want to miss -inform you. I have a Commercial license and the rules for myself are different than for Rec fisherman and could be different again from out of state fishermen.

Now that I am reading this post, I may bring my tin boat as well.   I'll be in Frisco the last week of July/Aug.  Is the clamming any good in that area? I'll bring my rakes if it is.

You should have no trouble catching plenty of crabs and clams in the Pamlico in August
I love my crabs.

Capt. Debbie

Great.  I have one Pot.  But they said if attached to private dock is ok w/o license.   I will do.  I have the salt water license so all set there

Limit is 50 crabs per person per day.   Min size is 5 inches.

You guys usually jug?  Or double anchor and set lines and traps off the boat?

Looking for Ramps and Bait shops north side of Haterras Inlet.

Also how is the fishing in those parts?   Light saltwater. Or medium freshwater gear is bets to bring?

Any Ideas?

Captain Frank- You may use 1 crab POT off a Private dock- just make sure its not a public one and that you have permission or are renting there . Medium freshwater gear is great for most of the sound side fishing. Lots of flounder, trout, drum, croakers and bluefish as well as many others.

Capt. Debbie

The dock is off the house I am renting.

What is size limit on crabs?  It's 50 per person per day

Check out the DMF website. Should be a link there to the size and creel limits of all the fish. There are a ton of flounder in the back waters as well as bluefish, trout, croakers, mullet, drum and probably a ton of sharks and a few other surprises.

Disappointing crabbing at best.
