Portsmouth Island Crabbing

I am headed to portsmouth Island next week to camp. We are accessing by way of Atlantic NC. I am bringing fishing Gear. I was going to bring some Crabbing tackle with a kayak thinking I could crab the back side of the island in the core sound.
Is the north side of the Island accessable for crabbing without a boat??
