Went to meet some out of state friends at Old Ebbitt Grill in DC. Never heard of this place till today. Actually has a lot of history to it, been around since the mid 1800's.  Good food, little expensive, but great service. Had some oysters and main course was scallops.  I saw they were serving blue catfish on the menu. Thought about it, but opted for the scallops.

They also have oysters there, most from out of state.  They have an oyster happy hour.

I used to guide tours in DC and I love old Ebbitt! It was one of my top recommendations for the out of towners to get a great meal.

My absolute top pick overall is the Hamilton though, just around the corner. It's owned by the same people. The feature live music in their downstairs theatre. Their food is excellent and they tend to highlight seafood, particularly sushi. Decent prices too. They have (had) a sushi happy hour with half price sushi rolls. One of their specialty rolls was a fried soft shell featured in a sushi wrap and it was darned good! If you ever get a chance give the Hamilton a try.

Often between our day and night tours I'd hit one of those places for dinner. With the specials and some moderation I could often eat at one of the nice restaurants for about the same as McDonald's (not including the generous tip I always leave) with obviously way better food.

About half the time the managers would just comp the meal though anyway because they knew I often recommended their restaurant and bar to a bus full of people after the tour. I never felt too bad about it because I never asked and would always recommend them anyway because I genuinely liked the places.

Best,
