Topless crab traps in FLA?

Out of curiosity, is it legal to use topless crab traps in Florida? Here in NJ, we put a string of 10-20 traps out with floats. Then we return to the beginning of the line and start to pull them. It's a good way to catch a lot of crabs in a short period of time, similar to trotlines. My cousin lives in Melbourne, and I thought I could bring my traps down on a visit sometime. Thanks in advance.

The answer to your question is YES, but since there is a 5 trap/pot limit per person most Floridians use 24" x 24" pots.  Trotlines are generally unheard of here.  MD rec crabbers have used two strings of 15 traps and a trotline with a 1200' limit forever.  Each state has it's own rules.

So, two people can run 10, and 3 people can run 15? You can still clean up with 15 traps. Thanks Crab Shack!

Yes, that is legal but all must hold a FL fishing license or be young or over 65 years old.
I have used topless traps here. I have also used box traps and ring nets. Now I pretty much just use ring nets. They are easier to use in the areas I crab where there is alot of underwater debris that fouls topless trap doors.
