Annual New Years Day Crabbing - 2021 Version - Galveston, Texas

My traditional New Years Day crabbing outing took place today.  For the last week, the temperatures have been in the high 60's to low 70's.  Last night, as the new year was ringing in, a cold front came through.  The temperatures dropped to the high 30's.  Apparently, the crabs don't like the sudden temperature drop.

After starting off the day with a 5K run, I headed to the island.  I had 7 hand lines in the water by 9am.  Normally, you see fish jumping and small crabs and fish swimming near shore.  Not today.  I did not see one fish the whole time I was there. 

The first two times I ran the lines, nothing.  I was getting discouraged.  The third run found two crabs about 4 1/2 inches in size.  I snapped a shot of the first one before I tossed her back.

I ran the lines several more times on only had one more silver dollar size crab on any of the lines.  By 10:30, I gave up.  Nothing to take home to cook, but at least I was not completely shut out.

The annual trip is what matters most anyway.  You know you will be eating crabs soon enough     Keep that New Years tradition going, and let us know what the next trip yields !!   Winter Cod fishing for me yesterday !!

Probably need to find some creek  with deeper water. Sometimes the right depth in the winter can produce the motherlode.
