Hard Crabbing Know-How / Re: Perfectionist vs Allerio B...

Quote from: Johnny Boy on Yesterday at 06:08:19 PMHave to agree with you that Perfectionist Rings are the best made and are easy to repair. I use 20 Perf. and also have 5 Allero which are well made but extremely heavy. I use them in deeper areas because the Allero is a deeper built ring, and the crab tends to stay in longer
I crab from a ponton boat, usually by myself, and the Perf. rings usually, as I pull them up, get behind the boat and will at times dump the crab out. Just have to pull fast.
Just my two cents!
Oh! Where has Perfectionist been?
One thing I noticed was that the netting on my first Allerio s held up decently.  The batch I got several years later the netting did not hold up nearly as well. I think they changed material. One thing I learned about Adam ( arti0972) was that he researched everything. Anything he used, there was a reason he used that brand, model or style.  He said he used Allerio ( he was the one who told me about them) but when got his Perfectionist rings he gave all of his Allerio rings to a friend.  He liked that the Perfectionist rings were lighter, worked better and took up less space on his kayak. I have to agree with him.

Jim (Perfectionist) is still around, just busy taking care of things.  I am hoping he can make it to the Get Together this year.

kept 3 dozen jimmies saturday morning from 8am to about noon.   only kept 6" + size jimmies, most of the keepers were just above 6".   and then there were two bigger like 7" crabs.      caught a LOT of pregnant sooks and smalls that i turned back loose away from my lines.

used 2 x 600' lines baited with bull lips.  this is the first time i used bull lips and they worked well i thought.    more durable than chicken necks.    best depth for keepers was 4-6'.   one of my lines started in 10' and ended in 4'.    the start from 10' to 8' there was NO action.   nada.  like the baits were never even touched.  so idk why the crabs were all shallower, but they were.

the keepers were packed and heavy.   got off the water to watch some college football and also because the wind picked up pretty good in advance of the front coming thru that day

2nd day of a back to back, hit the ramp at 5:30 AM to a very empty parking lot. The only problem was the river was socked in with a heavy fog/mist, so we weren't in any hurry to get on our way. Left the dock at 6:10 with visibility about 50 feet, some areas better than others. After about 15 minutes it lifted and off we went. Deployed our 23 ring traps and had a steady pick with 6 keepers being the best run. Tried a new spot and same results. Nothing great but enough to put a decent catch together. Caught at least 2 dozen large females that went back with one being a PB at 7 1/8". Back at the ramp with 3/4 bushel of nice crabs. Only had 2 over 7", but both were pretty black.

Jack knows all of the tricks of the trade. That drain allowing the water to escape during a pump failure is extremely important. I don't know how much sediment or waste you get with a closed system, rounding the corners on the inside of the tank would improve the flushing motion of the water as it circulates and help to drain out the waste.

I'm surprised that they only make that cable unit to be mounted on the "port" side of the boat. It would seem like there should be more demand for one that would mount on the "starboard" side. They do make a hydraulic unit that can mount on either side, but it just uses a helm pump like any other hydraulic steering, plus it requires a hydraulic cylinder to be mounted under the motor. I think crawdaddy did the right thing by rigging up the old style cable/pulley setup. He mounted it where he wanted it, plus the steering works the way it should. I'm sure it was much more economical. Great job!
