Sat May 14 2022 - Near Angola by the Bay

My son Nick and I crabbed near Angola by the Bay in the fog and steady rain. I forgot how much fun it is to crab in the rain. He crabbed from his kayak using 10 Perfectionist rings baited with chicken necks and I crabbed out of my Coleman Crawdad with 8 topless traps baited with bluefish. We crabbed for about 2-3 hours and ended up with 28 crabs ranging from 5-6 plus inches. Lot of small crabs went back to grow bigger. The rings out caught my traps by a large margin. Not sure if the bait made a difference or not, but the rings definitely were the ticket. Out of the 28 I think I only caught about 8 or 10 of the keepers and the rings caught the rest.
I started cooking my crabs upside down about 2 years ago and I like them better this way. If you have not tried your crabs steamed upside down, give it a try and you may like them better this way. I find the meat is cleaner, juicier and much easier to pick from the shell and when you store them upside down in the fridge, they stay moist, tender and the meat is easier to pick from the shells. Just make sure you ice them down good for about 15 minutes before layering them in your steamer. And when they first come out cooked, some of the shells have some delicious slurping juice in the tops of the shells.
My son took a video crabbing from his kayak. You can also check out many other crabbing videos on his Youtube channel "Delaware Outdoors".
Good luck to all you crabbers this year.

Nice job! You could cut notches at the top of your milk crate to use as gauges, that is what arti0972 did. I use a rectangular office waste basket between my legs to dump the crabs in from the rings.
I started out with a used Ascend fs12t, then I got a Kaku Wahoo 12.5.

Thanks. It was just fun to be out regardless of what we caught, but 28 in the area we crabbed was good for us.

arti0972 had a 5" notch on one side and a 5 1/4" notch on the other side.
