I've noticed me and a few other people this year have gone to extra trouble to get lost & found crabtraps back to rightful owners. I read CraigFos from Galveston Texas puts his phone number on his floats. That way, if someone (honest person) finds one of his traps they can call him to return it.

Had my number and this screen name on my floats for a bit . I painted over those floats ( fluorescent orange), but on a lot of them the black sharpie was still somewhat visible. Doesn't matter if someone gets my number. I usually don't answer calls unless I know the people or if they leave a voice mail, I'll call them back.

Fun fact, earlier this year a crab potter from VA found one of my old crab pot buoys floating in the bay. They had my first initial and last name (NC regulations) and the dude posted a picture on a facebook group, one thing led to another and he texted me a picture of the buoy. This was 5+ years after I quit crabbing in the upper cheapeake.

I think putting your phone number pm your floats is a great idea. I have trouble even rembering where I parked my car sometimes.....

Agree 100% Unless it's a "throwaway" number or one for a phone on which it's trivial to block spam, I wouldn't recommend it. Ya never know, though, maybe some people enjoy fielding dozens of car warranty renewal solicitations as a hobby...

I've been putting name n cell number on for years. I burn my name and cell phone number into the float with a soldering iron. Never washes them out. I've lost a few but none have ever made it home. Also 2 Md Comm traps "disappeared" and never made it home. Frankly I don't think the car warranty guys would do that much work to dial a number. They recruit dirt bag crabbers who found out traps? LOL The [curd] I saw during 29 years in IT Security no doubt made me a bit paranoid. Of course the classic dilemma remains: "I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?" ;-) [/quote]

I know my memory must be going because this made me look. Apparently he deleted one, so it is no longer obvious.
