Hi Masspi, I have crabbed along the Weweantic (I think), as well as along the Eel Pond flow off near Reservation beach in Mattapoisett. The Weweantic spot was a recommendation from my father in law's friend and seems to be the HOT spot according to you. I also have walked down Reservation beach to the end near the flow off many times with my son so he can play with the shells. I ended up seeing a few dead blues on the shoreline, and saw one big one walking about in the flow off. I tried crabbin there for about 2 hours one day with necks and ended up catching two. That was about 3 months ago. Anyways, I am heading to the Weweantic in a few weeks and was wondering if you could please send me your map. I will also share a spot in Rhode Island with you where I first went crabbin a few years back. There were LOTS there... thanks!!! - Mike

I am going to try that spot myself in a week or two. I've had no problems whatsoever parking at the trailer/boat lot at the end of Railroad ave... free, public parking as far as i know and you can walk down that dirt road and access it from there. Not a long walk at all. Please post back here if you go before next weekend and let me know what the conditions are if you get a chance, thanks!!

Thanks F'haven,
if I get out there this week I'll report back. I've never been there so didn't know what was best approach. Google Earth can only do so much.
So, you mean Railroad Ave that goes off to the west of the spillway, and not the pier just off Main St/ Water St to the east?

Jack,
Being at the far end of the range of the blue crab the seasons tend to be cyclic............some years are great and then you get years that are not so great. I have been crabbing and lobstering since I was a kid and at 63 I guess you could say I have seen a few seasons. The best ever was 3 years ago and the past two have been so so. I expect a slow start to this year because of all the rain and cloudy days..the water is just not warming up. Average water temperatures are between 58 and 60 degrees depending where you go.
The tidal estuaries of South Coast Massachusetts are really ideal for crabs and the impact of not many people doing it along with no commercial crabbing makes it ideal for the occasional hand liner or scapper. I am one of the few who uses traps (pots) and always get a larger harvest than someone handlining. I live on the water and see people crabbing all the time, most really don't have a clue where to go and the majority I see are doing it in the wrong places. Maybe some day I will post my maps with a few X's showing where the real honey holes are, but for now, I will continue to keep them to myself. Many years of pulling blanks learning how to do this right makes it hard to just give it away, besides figuring it out on your own is a better way.
The maps I e-mail out (over 1000 sent) just give you a general idea of where to go and there are many more that I have not done maps for. A smart guy would get a little Jon boat with a nice flat bottom and explore the upper ranges of the shallow brackish coastal rivers and in a short time find some basically untouched areas. I can think of several places where the crabs die of old age as I have never seen a sole crab the areas. Well good luck to all the MA crabbers this year.....go get your share !!!!!
