I don't think it'd be an issue, you are a resident, and there is no license for crabbing nor salt water fishing

I have seen a similar kind of "clamshell" design trap at Wallyworld. It's got tighter weave black mesh sides and it doesn't look small enough to use with rod & reel unless you have a 50W with stand up gear. Personally I keep it simple. Anything with springs or gadgets doesn't hold up in salt water in my experience.
I have been using hoop style open tops. Simple, repairable, cheap and easy to stow 30 of them. Last year I picked up a few collapsible traps so the kids (10, 7, & 7) can pull them w/o loosing them over the top like the open tops. I put them on buoys and crab the entire creek. I figure I'll use a different color (large dia. pool noodle sections are great floats) for the kids traps. Last year I swear the biggest crabs were the ones most able to beat me by swimming out the top, and I pull fast too! I lost some mumbo crabs so I wanted to get the collapsibles for the kids so they would really get into it by actually catching crabs.
Just my 2 cents. Hope whatever you do works out and you have FUN!

No regulation in terms of size for traps that collapse on the books to my knowledge. Doesn't mean that the Crab Hawk doesn't suck, though. ;-)

A word from the worlds worse crabber,,,,,,, I like many on the site thought the crab hawk was of no use, thatwas until I became land bound in Florida. I noticed, while fishing from the bank of the creek, that I always had some thing pulling on my line and low and behold it turned out to be big jimmies pulling on the bait. It was pretty frustrating getting the crabs within sight only to have them drop off before you could net them.
It became so frustrating, my brother in law purchased a couple over my Pooh poohing the item. I soon changed my mine when in one afternoon we caught 23 of those Jimmies from the bank. I guess all things have there place and time.
