While I don't like dredging for crabs, stopping them for a feel good measure is wrong too, aint going to make one bit of difference in the male crab population in the rivers and tributarys in MD.When the good rains come there will be plenty of crabs,at least until they have to run the gauntlet of chicken necks.

i can't see where dredging does any harm. we work with 2 dredges. 7 feet long apiece. drag for 1/2 mi.. within 100 yards the rope grass fills the teeth and lifts the dredge out of the bottom. we are using 100 year old technology. we tried a spot in early december. 51 bu that day. then the bay temp dropped. same spot....10 bu. all day. now the water temp is climbing. that same spot is yielding 15 to 20 bu.. mother nature will take care of itself. soon crabs will be swimming and we won't catch them till pot season. then the little varmits will be in trouble. limits everyday. i see the same thing every year. so many crabs the markets can't handle them. we will have days off just cause we can't sell them. mainly cause there are no picking houses left. where will we get our meat for crabcakes from? asia, venezuela?

probably send in a couple of hurricanes. the coast guard has told us that so much detergent(dish soap) has been used to clean up oil messes, that it lays on the bottom like tar. some prime bottom is now black.

i enjoy dredging. what can i say.
Just finished listening to most of the tape on the VMRC site.. skipped ahead some, but I think dredging in VA is done.  The Commisioner talked, at the very end of the tape, about his talk to a dredger.  21 barrels harvested, 7 barrels useable.  They talked about how they don't even know how much waste there is, broken unuseable crab..  Tone of his voice, It's about over.

They capped the fishery at the current level.  Only the boats that reported a catch in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 can fish.  I think thats what I heard on the tape. If the WDS report comes in under the red line, then I think the commision is leaning to eliminating the fishery all together.
