Hello I have a Maryland Sport fishing license with complimentary Crabbing license. I know I can fish in VA via Chesapeak and tributaries but can I use my crabbing license too or will I need to get a separate crabbing license?
thanks a lot

As it stands today, and things could change in the next few weeks, you do not need a license in VA to crab with collapsable traps, handlines or 2 commercial pots per person. You do need a VA license to trot line. You can get a 5 pot Rec license also but I am sure that one is going to change. There has been a long, on going debate, if VA conciders collapsable traps the same as pots. Some say yes, some say no. It is unclear in the law. The law says, each person can have 2 traps. It is really unclear if traps mean pots or collapsable traps too.
Even VMRC officer's are confused. Recently one told me I could have 5 pots with my Rec 5 pot license, plus 2 per family member. When I read the Reg's it seems to clearly say that a rec can not have more than 5 traps total, in the water at any one time.. Confused? Me 2.
