During the daytime you dont need a license but after 11pm you must have a night fishing permit you can get at the Robert Moses office near the PD station it costs $20.00

Licrabman,  Is the after 11 permit a state, county or town regulation.  Is it specifically for crabbing, or is it to be in the park at night.  I ask because I'm interested in crabbing, but would be going out in the bay with a boat, (in nassau county town of hempstead), and was wondering what the regs are.  Thanks.

Unfortunately they're no longer giving out night permits for the summer for Captree (stopped around Memorial Day), but they told me when they turned me away (I went to get one in early June) that essentially the permit is for parking, and as long as you park on the marina side you can walk across to the docks. It all seems to be pretty lackadaisically enforced, but I haven't gone out there before 4am yet.

OK, so there shouldn't be a problem if I go during the day (no permit at all), and do I need to pay for the parking?

If you get there before you don't need to pay - just drive right through the unmanned gates. Between 7am and 6pm (I think that's the time) they charge you $5 at the gate to enter the park.

FYI, I Was out at Captree for the first time last night.  Pulled about a dozen or so with a long net.  At 11:30 the wardens came walk the pier to check the catches and to tell people without the night fishing license that they would have to leave.

licrabman: can you point me in the right direction to find this office? i'm thinking about doing some night crabbing this year. i'd also like to find out for sure if this permit is just to park, or to actually crab. i wonder if i can bring anyone with me or if they have to have a "permit" too.

I just finished crabbing at captree tonight.. what a ton of fun.. I went with my wife and kids and yes at 11:30 the constible came around and looked in every bucket to check what perople were catchin and lookin for licences..  He kicked out those who didnt have one..

I didnt know i needed one, I also was unaware of the size restrictions, to which i asked him what it was and how to measure them, He told me 4" (tho i think i looked on the NYS site and it said blue claw and hard had to be 3.5")..  But i didnt quite understand him when he was telling how to properly measure them..

Is it the budy from side to side?  He pointed to like the mid section to the end of it?  I dunno.. Can someone clarify for me?

I also want to get the night fishing permit, but i will have to wait til after labor day for them to go back on sale.

4.5" for hard shells, point to point (i.e. left to right).
Check out the regs in the sticky post at the top of this page.

No Need for a license but at about 7:00Pm the mosquitoes come out and make it very unpleasant to crab or fish.
I've came here about 3 times and left with about a dozen crabs in approx. 3 hours.
If there were no regulations about sizes, I would have came out with approx. 2 dozen+ each time.
