Gene the crabman, We are heading down Kitty Hawk in mid august with our 23' C-hawk. We have crabbed near the bridge going into the island at southern shores in the past with a little success (mostly small crabs). We were wondering if we went more towards the mainland in the albemarle sound, would we have more luck finding larger crabs. You seem to be the crabbing authority for the area so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Right now there are large crabs just North of the bridge, up towards the Duck Water Tower,in the Martins Point Area. But that place can change from week to week. I'll let you know whats going on when you get here, just stay in touch... Gene

Gene, Would you also know some fishing hotspots 5-15 miles offshore? Our wives gave us the mornings to screw off so were going to do the crab and fish combo. Just wondering? Thanks for your crabbing info.

just got back from hatteras yesterday. from directly in front of the hatteras inlet set a course on your gps for the "rock pile".its about 25 miles out. we were headed to the spot and stopped about 10 miles before we got there and started trolling. caught a nice wahoo then saw some baler dolphin so started pitching mullet to them and caught 7. caught a big king mackerel and gaffer dolphin another day. all was within 17 miles of hatteras inlet. we went all the way to the rock pile 2 times but didnt get any hits out there. as far as crabbing go's we caught alot of sponge crabs but no keeper males. we laid the line behind odens dock then moved 2 more times way farther up and then we just gave up on the crabbing and relaxed for the day. a great vacation though!

What a waste of good mullet,y'all should have eat the bait and threw the dolphin and kings overboard. That should be a good place. I have pots there with orange floats on em..
See,you don't even have to carry gear or bait to catch crabs what a guy Gene is.

what are the sizes of the crab's at the outer Bank's? my wife and i are heading down next year at this time with most of her family and i would not mind doing some crabbing, we will most likely be staying in the Wave's/Salvo area. I was there 2 1/2 year's ago on my Hunny Moon and fished off the Rodanthe Pier and had fun but i would like to get into some good flounder fishing and catch something other then Blues and hard head's. What is hitting this time of year. I am also looking into going out on the Miss Hattera's for some red's and grouper. Any Info would help, Also what do crab's go for by the bushel down there?

Probably isn't any fish that puts up a better fight lb for lb than a mullet, the real trick is getting them to bite, very few can catch one with a hook.
