Pots v. Traps...
«

I just read the abstract page that I posted a link to and now I wonder if Massachusetts allows unlicensed people to use hand traps...
It reads like this,
"A lobster/crab permit is required of all persons to fish for lobster and edible crabs in coastal waters. To sell lobster and crabs, a commercial lobster/crab permit is required. However, no permit is required to take edible crabs for use by immediate family, provided that the number of crabs does not exceed fifty(50) in one day
and that no pots or traps are used
."
If so, a topless trap requires a painted, numbered buoy... right?

I read it to mean no traps, topless, box, foldup, ring, or net traps bhut that a unlicensed person can handline or dip net up to 50 crabs.

Seeing it with new eyes, I'm inclined to agree.
Somehow I used to think we could use a hand trap, but not a pot without licensing/ numbering.
No matter for me except I need to paint and burn more buoys.
Anybody else care to weigh in?

This was a issue in VA for years. For along time VA said collapsible traps were the same as pots or traps. They still have not defined it in law but the head guy is supposed to have told the water cops to concider collapsible traps as hand lines. Here, "Traps" mean Crab Pounds.

In Fla."trap" covers everything but a string with a neck on the end of it.
