crabbed tred avon river in md. 9/8. caught and released some big, heavy she crabs all in a very small area. these crabs were averaging about 7". I measured one at 7 and three quarters inch. Just wondering if anyone has caught an 8" she crab, and if seven and three quarters is exceptional.

Why are you throwing them back? A female that size has almost assuredly mated and spawned already....there only use now is to be eaten!

It is illegal for a recreational crabber to keep female crabs in maryland waters for 2008.

"Unlike most marine organisms, blue crabs mate and spawn at different times. During mating the male crab transfers his sperm into special sac-like receptacles in the female crab. These receptacles store the male's sperm so that it can be used for egg fertilization at a later time. Viable sperm can live in the female's seminal receptacles for well over a year and will be used for two or more spawnings. See Mating for more information on this subject." http://www.bluecrab.info/spawning.htmlAt COMB up to 7 spawnings have been documented from one mating.

Thats ok gk the point of the post was to hear if any other members had caught a female in the 8" range in local waters nj. md. del. In 50 years of crabbing I cant recall catching such large #'s of 7" plus females in one spot. And as I stated it was in Md. waters and the girls were released.
