Grin Hello everyone, this is my first post, love the forum, lots of good people and info.

I will be coming down to the outer banks September 20 2008 (this Saturday YAY!) with my

girl friend. She had no hobbies until she met me and now I got her hooked on fresh

water bass fishing, hang gliding and OBX surf fishing. She has never been crabbing and

wants to go. I have been crabbing around the Chesapeake Bay MD, just chicken necking

long ago. It would be great if I could get her on some crabs that she caught herself

and steam them. I like catching them to, but I will have more of a blast watching her

catching them. I really want her to have the fun experience that I have had, but could

use some advice/info.

2thumbsup We are staying in avon for 2 weeks. I was planning on crabing in the sound but read The

crabs in the Pamlico Sound aren't very tastey in the summer months, due to the high

salt content, they have an iodine taste to them. That report was back in june and was

wondering if the news is the same for now. I think I read it was mostly females to, but

that was also an older post. I only want to get the males. Has it gotton any better ?

I was also going to target Lake Mattamuskeet and Colington. We will be crabbing off the

bank using chicken necks and a net. Unfortunatly we wont have a boat.

I was wondering if the crabs are still being caught in these area's, I have no idea of

the season.

dizzy2 Also, reading about the license is really confusing. All I want is a non-resident recreational crab

license for chicken necking on the bank. Wondering how much it is and the limit.
I

usually get the 10 day for surf fishing, but not sure if it covers crabbing. I believe

I read something on a non-resident recreational commercial license, which is confusing

LOL. Does anyone know what I would need, the cost and how many we can keep ? Just want

to plan ahead of time, money is kind of tight. If this info has already been explained

in other post I have missed it.

Any advice and info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !

Cool Made a call to the Fishin' Hole in Salvo,  they always give great advice and set us up when I am down at the Outer Banks.

The crabs right now are small in the sound but taste great

No license needed to chicken neck in NC.

We can keep 100 crabs per day

They will show us some local spots to go to when I stop in Saturday

Peace,

Save your time crabbing in the Pamlico Sound, come up to Colington.. The water is still warm and the crabs will not taste good.If you already know how crabs taste, you'll be disappointed..You need to get in the  more fresh waters of the Upper OBX to get the better crabs..If you get up to Colington, give me a call, i live about 1/2 mile from the crabbing spot on Colington road... If you'd like to go Commercial Crabbing your welcome to come along with me.. And it's "Free". Grin   I leave at Day Break and get back in around Noon..

Hey Gene,   thumbsup

I appreciate the advice about not crabbing the sound. It would be a lot of fun catching them, but disappointing finding out they taste bad. We both love seafood and know how good seafood is supposed to taste.

Thanks for your offer to go out commercial crabbing, sounds like a good time/experience. I think I saw your phone number on another post, I will give you a call when we get settled in and we can figure out a good day to go out.

Thanks again for your advice and generous offer !

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I didn't even notice it, my focus is off a little. I am running around trying to get everything ready to head down to OBX and wondering how we are going to fit everything in the car hehehee

Thanks tattoo,

Both of us are VERY anxious to get down there, everyone is so nice and laid back. Plus, what a great playground, so much to do, and enjoy nature. I am already planning another trip in the middle of October.

Thanks for the advice 125blackfire,

I have not fished the piers at the Outer Banks but we have walked the pier in Rodanthe when I was there in May. Talked to a kind gentleman who gave some pointers for when I do fish on the pier. We mostly surf fish and for the first time planning on going to the point to fish for Drum and anything else we can get. Hopefully they will be biting good.  I am hoping for dry weather so we can fish and crab.    2thumbsup
The first thing we do before we check in is get our licenses. It would be no fun looking over your shoulder wondering if the man is going to walk over the dune or drive up and check to see if your legal. Heck I already have our NIGHT BEACH DRIVING Permit printed out and ready to throw on the dash.    Cool

I will post our catch if we get anything worth while. Either way we always have a great time.

I thought I would post a couple pictures of our trip. It was very rough the first week, because of a Nor, Easter bearing down. We could not surf fish or enjoy the beach the first week because of the storm, but we did get to soak some chicken necks to catch some blue crab. Even though it was chilly and windy we managed to catch 4 keepers the first day all 5" and a lot of smaller ones we returned to grow up. The next day we were able to keep 14 crabs, averaging 6 1/2" and a lot of smaller ones we threw back. We really had a good time and my girl friend was able to crab for the first time in her life.

Gene, we wanted to hook up with you and go out on your boat, but it was way to rough, windy and chilly, so we opted out. We did see 3 commercial crabbers coming in from fishing and wondered if any of them were you. Hope we can get a rain check to go out on your boat the next time we are there.  Grin
